Noted analyst and Engadget pal Michael Gartenberg stated that the iPhone is first party software ONLY -- i.e. not a smartphone by conventional terms, being that a smartphone is a platform device that allows software to be installed. That means hungry power-users -- you know, those people ready and willing to plunk down $600 for an 8GB musicphone -- won't be able to extend the functionality of their phone any more than Apple (but thankfully not Cingular) dictates. Other unfortunate realities about the device :

- No 3G. Shortly thereafter, every notebook manufacturer except Apple produced at least one tiny and inexpensive laptop just like it. Nowadays, netbooks are not that tiny anymore - little by little they have increased in size from 7" via 9" and now the standard screen size of a netbook is 10 inches. Even a couple of 12-inch models have been released.

Hardware
What they all have in common is the hardware - with a few deviations it consists of an Intel Atom CPU at 1.6GHz, 1GB or RAM, a 160GB hard drive and integrated GMA950 graphics. The Eee PC, however, has been upgraded with an ever so slightly faster 1.66GHz Atom processor and a higher 667MHz FSB speed instead of earlier models which had 533MHz.

The speed increase is not big enough to be noticeable, but you might feel better purchasing an upgraded model. Asus' main selling point with the 1000HE is the battery life. According to the manufacturer, you should be able to keep it alive for 9.5 hours without resorting to an outlet. To achieve this formidable battery life, you need to use aggressive power-saving schemes, no Wi-Fi and turn the brightness all the way down. In our general usage test it still delivered more than 7 hours, which is still more than acceptable.

Design
As far as the design goes, the Eee PC 1000 HE stays with the concept we've seen in previous Eee netbooks. The keyboard is almost full size (92%) and the trackpad buttons are slightly tilted in the front. The entire casing of the netbook is glossy, which enhances the overall look but also attracts fingerprints easily.

On the whole, the design of the 1000HE focuses on usability; it's not spectacularly thin like some of its siblings, such as Asus S101 netbook, but it certainly gets the job done with flying colors. Besides, keeping the design simple also helps keep the price to a minimum, which is often the deciding factor for a netbook buyer.

Connectivity and Features
The ports have been placed on the left- and right-hand sides of the laptop - none at the back. On the right is a memory card reader, 2 USB and VGA and on the left is another USB port, Ethernet, and audio line in/out.

Summary
While there are better looking netbooks on the market, the Eee PC 1000HE comes at a very attractive price point and offers excellent battery life. It's also very easy to use thanks to the large keyboard, and has all the features that the competition offer plus a little extra. Combine these aspects and you have one of the best netbooks currently available.

Asus Eee PC 1000HE Technical Specifications

Processor Atom N280 1.66GHz

Memory 1GB DDR2

Harddrive 160GB

OS Windows XP Home

Weight 3lbs

Screen 10 inches

Screen resolution 1024x600

Graphic Card Intel GMA 950

Battery Life 7.5 hours

Dell Adamo Officially a Huge Disappointment

The much hyped thin-and-light 13.4 inch Adamo laptop is now available for preorder from Dell, and it's officially a lot less exciting than we'd hoped for.

The starting price for the Adamo is $1,999 and for that you get an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV at 1.2GHz, 2GB of 800MHz DDR3 memory, a 128GB solid state drive, and a genuine copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Oh joy. And graphics are delivered by the mediocre Intel GM45 chip.

Sure, this is a luxury laptop and it’s arguably good looking, but put it next to its rival – the MacBook Air, also a luxury model – and it immediately pales in comparison. It also weighs 4 pounds, a pound more than the Air, which is a lot when comparing ultraportables.

Even in the best of economic climates it would be hard to sell this laptop, but right now it should prove damn near impossible. To continue the MBA comparison, the Apple ultraportable is also available with an SSD and uses more powerful 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo’s from Intel, and also has the much more capable Nvidia chipset.

And to finally seal the deal, the MacBook Air does not come with a copy of Vista Home Premium (genuine).

Laptop Trends : Small and Colorful

It’s stylish. It’s small. It comes in four pretty colors. It connects to the Internet, affordable, and portable. Realistically portable, since it weighs only 1.4 lbs. My friend’s teacup Yorkie (mini Yorkshire Terrier) that goes where she goes weighs more than this notebook.

The Vaio P’s prettiness is only half of the reason this notebook is obsession worthy. The other half is functionality, and the specs are as appealing as its outside. It has (from their site):

- 1.33GHz Intel Processor
- Genuine Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Home Basic
- 8″ LED backlit 1600 x 768 display, 1.4lbs
- Up to 60GB hard drive, available 128GB SSD
- Up to 4-hour battery
- 2GB RAM

The very first Macbooks had similar specifications, so speed and power will not be an issue if you’re planning to surf the net. The Vaio P was unveiled last week at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas, and already available to purchase. I can’t stop obsessing and even considering going back to a Windows machine since switching to a Mac years ago.
